Wells – Water Wells

water wells

The third type of well under the Wells layer is Water Wells.  These wells are the domestic wells drilled by rural residents for groundwater (Alberta Environment Water Wells) and User Water Wells, which are user-input wells.  They do not included wells drilled as part of upstream oil and gas development.

In some cases, there will be more than one Alberta Environment Water Well tied to a symbol on the map.  This is because multiple wells may have been reported to the same LSD or Quarter-Section.  In these cases, hovering over the symbol (A blue circle with a W in the middle) will bring up the window in the following image.

By clicking on the arrow near the top, the user can move through the different wells and once the desired well is displayed under the Well #:, the Click for more info . . . text can be selected to open up the water well information screen.

If only one well is associated with the Water Well symbol, a normal double click will open up the information screen.

user water well

User Water Wells are wells put on the Map by AbaData 2.0 users.  They are often created in order to provide a more precise location for the Alberta Environment Water Wells, which can be located very approximately on the map.  In order to create a User Water Well, first turn on the layer under the Wells in the Map Display menu.  They, under the Objects menu to the left of the map, click on the Water Wells text.  The following box will open.

Objects water well

Either enter in the coordinates of the water well, or click the Add button and click the point on the map where the water well will be located.  This will open the User Water Well information screen which allows the user to input some information about the well.  Once it is saved, a User Water Well will continue to be available on the map even after logging out.
